Resolution on Achieving Sustainable Development through Corporate Social Responsibility

The 22nd Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum,

Recalling APPF Resolution on Environment and Development adopted during the 11th Annual Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that calls upon APPF member countries to cooperate with the private sectors to find solutions to confront the impact of global warming by understanding the relation between environment and economic development;

Recalling also APPF Resolution on Balanced Economic and Social Development adopted during the 12th Annual Meeting in Beijing, China, which recognizes the widening gap between North- South, deteriorating ecosystem, and uneven social development accompanying globalization;

Welcoming the conclusion of the 2013 APEC Ministerial Meeting which encourages officials to work with the private sector to build and improve upon Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) practices;

Recognizing that the harmful impact of not endorsing the principles of mutual interests in economic and development will seriously affect developing countries’ efforts to achieve sustainable development;

Understanding CSR as a means to enhance sustainable development strategies;

Affirming that regional and global cooperation to respond to economic and development challenges is based on the principle of equity in accordance with their common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities as well as national circumstances;


RESOLVES TO:

1. Call upon APPF member countries to be aware of the need of the involvement of private sectors, including Multi-National Corporations (MNCs), National Corporates, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), to contribute in balancing economic growth and environmental sustainability through CSR practices;

2. Call upon APPF member countries to support and contribute actively to regional and global efforts to ensure that the responsibility of private sectors in achieving sustainable development is recognized across the Asia Pacific region;

3. Call upon the Asia Pacific countries, the international community and institutions to explicitly support least developing countries (LDC)’s efforts to mitigate and adapt to the negative impacts of business or commercial exploitation on local communities;

4. Encourage the continuation of public-private dialogue on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and concrete implementation of CSR practices to respond to the challenges of sustainable development.
