Resolution on Promoting Regional Cultural Diversity and Tourism

We the parliamentarians of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), gathering in Canberra, Australia, for the 28th Annual Meeting of the APPF under the theme Parliamentary Partnerships for 2020 and Beyond:

Recognising sustainable tourism is a key driver for economic, social and regional development, creating jobs and promoting investment, supporting communities including through the regional dispersal of tourism, and fostering greater understanding between peoples;

Recalling the Declaration on Advancing Tourism’s Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals made by G20 Tourism Ministers, in Hokkaido, Japan, on 26 October 2019;

Noting the Statement on Harnessing Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism in the Asia Pacific made by APEC Tourism Ministers, in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on 1 June 2018;

Welcoming the contribution regional cultural diversity and tourism cooperation can make to economic growth, maintenance of peace, and promotion of understanding between nations in the region; and

Underscoring the region’s strong cultural diversity and multicultural attributes.


1. Encourage sustainable tourism to promote economic growth in the region;

2. Promote cultural diversity, education including vocational education in tourism, and tourism exchange across the region to increase people-to-people interaction and promote economic development; and

3. Enhance regional air and sea connectivity through direct flights and shipping services, including cruise shipping, by encouraging investment in infrastructure.
