Resolution Calling Upon the Governments of Asia Pacific to Set Up a Joint System of Monitoring and responding with Dispatch to any Trans-Boundary Pollution that May Arise from any Source

APPF07/RES/09

(submitted by the Philippine and Indonesian Delegations)

The Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum,

Determined to pursue a program of sustainable development in Asia Pacific, with emphasis on a balanced ecosystem and an unyielding concern for the protection of the same;

Encouraged by certain high-profile environmental projects and the efforts by some governments to achieve specific environmental targets for the quality of river water and ambient air within the region;

Mindful nevertheless of the helplessness of individual countries in dealing with trans-boundary pollution such as the fire that gutted a wide expanse of Indonesia’s forests in 1997-98 and cast its haze for months in neighbouring countries with ASEAN;

Calls as it hereby upon the governments of Asia Pacific to set up a joint system of monitoring and responding with dispatch to any trans-boundary pollution that may arise from any source;

Also Call On APPF members to build up a permanent Regional Emergency Unit to prevent and help overcome the effects and impact of fire, haze and other types of pollution.
