Resolution on the Denuclearization and Peaceful Reunification on the Korean Peninsula

The Twelfth Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum,

Emphasizing that peace and stability of the Korean peninsula is a great concern for Northeast Asia, as well as for the Asia Pacific region;

Confirming the importance of denuclearization for the peace and stability of the Peninsula as well as of the Asia-Pacific region;

Reaffirming the consensus among all member states in support of the
denuclearization and peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula, as was stipulated in previous APPF Annual Meeting resolutions APPF/RES/01, APPF9/RES/11 and APPF11/RES/01;

Highly appreciating the diplomatic efforts to peacefully resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula that the international community has exerted;

Noting that the parties to the first round of six-party talks in Beijing, China in August 2003 recognized the need to peacefully resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue, and to formulate a comprehensive measure that also addresses North Korea's security and economic concerns;

RESOLVES TO:

Support the six-party talks as an effort to peacefully and diplomatically resolve the North Korean nuclear issue through dialogue among members of the international community, and to foster permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula;

Affirm the commitment to a peaceful solution of the nuclear issue facing the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and to the denuclearization of Korean Peninsula while addressing all the concerns of the parties and working together to maintain peace and stability on the Peninsula;

Call upon the relevant parties for prompt and sincere implementation of South-North Korean Summit Declaration in 2000 and Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Declaration in 2002;

Support the Republic of Korea to continue to extend economic and humanitarian assistance to DPRK;

Confirm that the reconciliation and cooperation of two Koreas, and the ultimate independent peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula is essential for ensuring permanent peace in the entire Asia-Pacific region, as well as in Northeast Asia:

Decide to remain seized of this issue.
